“Join Us For Good” is more than a tagline at Eastern Insurance Group LLC. This year, The Eastern Bank Charitable Foundation will commit $1.8 million to community-based organizations focused on addressing a wide range of issues that disproportionately impact women and girls. As a wholly-owned subsidiary of Eastern Bank, Eastern Insurance supports the initiative of Advancing Women by using our spotlight series to feature strong and empowering female leaders who are doing good in their communities.
For Women’s History Month, we are pleased to spotlight our client, Whittier Street Health Center, and their President and CEO, Ms. Frederica Williams. Ms. Williams has served Boston’s local communities in this role since 2002 and is largely responsible for making Whittier the incredible resource that it is today. In 2017 alone, Whittier provided over 111,240 clinic visits and more than 22,000 outreach visits, supplying $2,267,000 in free health care to some of Boston’s most underserved residents.
In recognition of her hard work, leadership, and service to her community, Ms. Williams has been named a Game Changer on The Boston Business Journal’s Power 50 List in 2015 and 2016 and received the Commonwealth Compact, Diversity Stand-Out Award in 2013. Under her leadership, Whittier Street Health Center has been named as one of the Top 100 Women-Led Businesses in Massachusetts in 2015, 2016, and 2017.
Whittier Street Health Center is much more than the health center that their name implies; the organization provides high quality, reliable, and accessible primary care and support services for diverse populations to promote wellness and eliminate health and social disparities. They have various clinical services and community health programs at their Roxbury location, including an HIV prevention program, a diabetes center, a Refugee Health Assessment Clinic, and even a fitness center. In 2016, Whittier Street Health Center expanded to launch a new pharmacy at Quincy Commons in Dorchester to provide access to high quality, low-cost prescription drugs to those in need in this underserved community. Most importantly, and perhaps the most unique feature of Whittier Street Health Center, is the philosophy of providing total care for the whole person. Patients are not viewed in terms of medical conditions and disease states. Instead, Whittier Street Health Center strives to provide services and programs that support holistic health.
In 2012, Ms. Williams led the development of the health center’s first permanent 78,900-square-foot health facility in Roxbury. The building is Silver LEED Certified, has the capacity to handle 220,000 visits annually, and houses a comprehensive medical home for patients. The facility also contains a variety of health resource, including full dental and visual services, and a Community Education Room, which frequently opens to the community for celebrations and education on total health, and even hosts computer classes to encourage career advancement.
Eastern Insurance and Eastern Benefits group are proud to partner with Whittier Street Health Center and to support the good they are doing on a daily basis in the communities they serve.
