In partnership with our parent company, Eastern Bank, our employees go above and beyond every year to give back to the local communities we serve throughout New England. One of the foundational beliefs of Eastern Insurance and Eastern Bank is to help others in the communities we serve.

Together, through the Eastern Bank Charitable Foundation, we use a portion of our proceeds to donate millions of dollars every year to nonprofits and charitable organizations throughout New England. However, we think this good-natured spirit is best embodied by the team and individual efforts of our employees. In 2018 alone, Eastern Insurance employees volunteered a collective 3,910 hours of recorded volunteer hours.

We are happy to donate time, energy, and resources to give back to organizations that are making a positive impact and creating change. If you’d like to volunteer more in 2018, but are unsure of where to start, here are 10 great organizations we supported in 2018 that you can support too.

Veterans Legal Services

We proudly support Veterans Legal Services and the amazing work they do in our communities to promote self-sufficiency, stability, and financial security for homeless and low-income veterans through free and accessible legal services.

VLS has provided life-changing legal services to Boston’s veterans in need for 27 years. Last year alone they provided legal assistance to more than 800 Greater Boston veterans.

In addition to other events, Eastern Insurance and Eastern Benefits Group celebrated the amazing work of Veterans Legal Services at their Annual Gala in November with our parent company, Eastern Bank.

Whittier Street Health Center

Whittier Street Health Center is much more than a health center — the organization provides high quality, reliable, and accessible primary care and support services for diverse populations to promote wellness and eliminate health and social disparities.

In 2017 alone, Whittier provided over 111,240 clinic visits and more than 22,000 outreach visits, supplying $2,267,000 in free health care to some of Boston’s most underserved residents.

Eastern Benefits Group is a proud partner of Whittier Street Health Center and supports the good they are doing on a daily basis in the communities they serve. You can learn more about Whittier Street Health Center and their incredible President & CEO, Frederica Williams, in our client spotlight here.

YMCA of Greater Boston

This year, our President & CEO Hope Aldrich was honored by the YMCA of Greater Boston with the Legacy Award for Volunteer Leadership at their annual fundraiser, The Spark Party.

Hope has been a board member of the YMCA of Greater Boston since 1996 and is a passionate supporter of their mission of serving children and adults throughout the Greater Boston area. She is especially dedicated to equality and access, workforce development, and early education.

To date, Hope has raised more than $3 million to support the Y’s programs and services. She was instrumental in the development of the YMCA’s Training, Inc. program, and remains actively involved with the program today. With the help of partner companies like Eastern Insurance, the program has resulted in 4,750 graduates and an 80% job placement rate.

Dennison Lubricants Foundation / National Multiple Sclerosis Society

Eastern Insurance is a proud sponsor of the Dennison Lubricants Foundation, which supports the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. In honor of MA local Brian Dennison’s aunt, who fought MS with an inimitable spirit, the Dennison family hosts a golf tournament each year to raise money for the National MS Society. The MS Society funds cutting-edge research to find a cure for the disease, as well as provides services and programs to people living with MS.

The family business, Dennison Lubricants, sponsored their 11th annual charity golf tournament in September 2018. Our team showed their support by making a charitable donation.

Cradles to Crayons

Cradles to Crayons provides children from birth through age 12 living in homeless or low-income situations with the essential items they need to thrive – at home, at school, and at play. They supply these items free of charge by engaging and connecting communities that have with communities that need.

Throughout the year, our employees volunteered at Cradles to Crayons Massachusetts to prepare outfit packs for children in need this winter.

Rise Against Hunger

Rise Against Hunger on a mission to end hunger in our lifetime by providing food and life-changing aid to the world’s most vulnerable and creating a global commitment to mobilize the necessary resources.

Eastern Insurance employees volunteered for Rise Against Hunger in October 2018 and packaged over 7,500 meals. These meals were shipped internationally to help in the organization’s fight against hunger.

Massachusetts Fallen Heroes

Eastern Insurance and Eastern Benefits Group are proud of our employee members of the Eastern Military Veterans and Families Network, who happily give countless hours of time, resources, and leadership in support of our armed forces, veterans, and their families throughout the year.

Over Memorial Day Weekend 2018, our President and CEO Hope Aldrich hosted, and several employees attended, the 8th Annual Massachusetts Fallen Heroes Dinner.

In addition, in honor of Veteran’s Day this year, our team and their networks participated in the Massachusetts Fallen Heroes’ lighting package fundraiser.

Bakes for Breast Cancer

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, our Wakefield and Newburyport offices hosted an internal 'Bake For A Cure' bake sale to benefit Bakes for Breast Cancer. Our offices collectively raised over $300 for the organization.

Bakes for Breast Cancer’s mission is to further research, prevention, and treatment of breast cancer by supporting breast cancer research and treatment institutes. They work toward achieving this mission by hosting dessert-oriented events that raise money for breast cancer research one sweet treat at a time.

Catie's Closet

Catie’s Closet provides students living in poverty with the ability to discreetly pick and choose basic necessities and clothing they are proud to wear by furnishing a “closet” of donated items to schools in low-income communities.

David James of Eastern Insurance was inspired to volunteer with Catie’s Closet when he heard a story from the organization about a little girl that didn’t have any shoes to wear to school. She wore a pair of her mom’s shoes, which were much too big, and was teased by her classmates so much that she didn’t want to go back to school. Catie’s Closets heard about the situation and made sure she had a few new pairs of shoes, which helped her regain the confidence to return to school.

This year, David joined several members of the Eastern Bank team to volunteer at Catie's Closet in Dracut.

Cardinal Cushing Centers

Cardinal Cushing Centers supports people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, providing possibilities and opportunities for growth and advancement.

This year, Eastern Bank and Eastern Insurance were a Relationship Sponsor for Cardinal Cushing Centers' Springtime Gala. Our team supported the event in a big way with Matt Shadrick, EVP of Eastern Benefits Group, as a celebrity model in the Tommy Hilfiger Fashion Show, shown below with his runway partner and Cushing student Thomas Wolfe. Todd Drager was involved in event planning and fundraising efforts as a member of the 2018 Gala Committee.
