Local Hero Saluted For Outstanding Community Service

Safeco Corporation Honors Each with $15,000

SEATTLE, Wash. Jan. 12, 2009 - Safeco Insurance, a member of Liberty Mutual Group, today announced a local recipient of its annual Community Hero Awards. Thirty individuals from across the country have been selected to receive this award and today, Safeco honored and recognized Sheila Aliber of Needham, Mass. for her extraordinary dedication to helping others and inspiring change within her community.

Nominated by Safeco agent Susan Donnell, of Eastern Insurance Group, for her tireless commitment to strengthening and enriching her community, Aliber was presented with a $15,000 check for the non-profit organization at which she volunteers: Rosie's Place in Boston.

"Safeco is pleased to join our agents in acknowledging and celebrating the contributions of the heroes in their home towns," said Mark Dederer of the Safeco Insurance Foundation.

Aliber is a 22-year volunteer at Rosie's Place, a sanctuary for poor and homeless women and their children in Boston's South End. In 1997, Aliber launched "Childworks," a program geared towards children, which includes weekly arts and crafts, as well as special activities during school vacation weeks at Rosie's Place. In addition, Aliber has been catering Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter meals for Rosie's Place's permanent housing residents for more than a dozen years.

Donnell, of Framingham, Mass., is a marketing executive at Eastern Insurance Group in Natick, and former neighbor of Aliber's. "Sheila's commitment has not only affected the lives of women and children, it has also had a long lasting impact on programs and services offered at Rosie's Place," Donnell wrote in a nomination letter to Safeco.

"Safeco agents around the country work with so many outstanding citizens. We are proud to be honoring this year's Community Hero Award recipients and hope our small contribution to their causes enables them to continue making a difference in the communities they serve," adds Danielle Clark of Safeco's Community Relations department.
