What sets us apart at Eastern Benefits Group is our amazing team of employees. Thanks to their outstanding leadership, we’re not only able to provide superior customer service to our clients but also uphold our commitment to giving back to our community year-round. As we continue to spotlight our team members here at EBG, we’re proud to introduce you to Vice President, Benefits Administration, Michelle Nelson.

How did you begin working at Eastern Benefits Group and how have you progressed during your time with the company?

Insurance wasn’t always a career goal for me, I actually earned my art degree and worked as a graphic designer before joining the industry in 2010. Looking for a new challenge and a stable career, I started working at an insurance carrier and loved seeing all the different offerings and benefits available to employees. I spent the next few years absorbing as much as I could, eventually moving into an account executive and retention and sales role. During that time, the one thing that stayed true throughout my journey was that every day was different, and I was constantly learning something new. I joined the Eastern Benefits Group team four years ago and today I lead the benefits administration team. I love how everyone is constantly learning — that’s what makes us different and what makes us great. We’re committed to being the best at what we do and finding ways to improve as we move forward.

Can you tell us a little about your work with the Women in Leadership program?

In the fall of 2020, I was nominated for and applied to the Women in Leadership program, which brings together women from Greater Boston in all areas of business. This networking-focused organization helps women continue to lead intuitively and teaches them how to use their strengths to be the leader their teammates need. Since holding a leadership role here at EBG, I have seen how everyone has unique paths to success and different needs from their team. It’s important to be a sounding board for them and support them in any way you can.

Since transitioning to working remotely over the past year, my responsibilities as a leader have shifted and the trust in my team has expanded. During these ever-changing times, I have to have confidence in my team to get their job done and let me know if something goes wrong. If they’re having a hard time, we’ll find a way to fix it together. Everyone at Eastern Benefits Group has a strong sense of accountability and works together to make sure we serve our clients as best we can.

What do Michelle’s coworkers have to say?

“In a few short years, Michelle has built a highly successful and efficient benefits technology team. Her leadership combined with her ability to solve complicated solutions drives so much value for clients and colleagues.”

Matt Shadrick, Executive Vice President

“Her willingness to go above and beyond for her team is clear, Michelle consistently meets our clients’ deadlines and generates a great client experience in producing a creative and effective way our clients’ employees can elect their benefit programs. Michelle is always going the extra mile for her team and I wish her continued success at Eastern Benefits Group and in life.  It has truly been an honor to be her colleague these past few years!”

Assistant Vice President, Account Executive, Michael Bettano.

Michelle never asks more of her team than she is willing or able to do herself. She is an exceptional leader.”

Colleen Doherty, Senior Vice President of Compliance & Client Services

Outside the Office

When I’m not working, I love to spend time with my husband and 4-year-old son. We enjoy getting outside hiking, bike riding, and gardening. I also try to uphold our overall mission of Eastern Bank, Eastern Insurance, and Eastern Benefits Group, to give back to the communities we serve by supporting Cradles to Crayons and United Way.

We’re so proud to have you on our team, Michelle!
